BRICS
Judicial cooperation within BRICS is focused on strengthening dialogue between the highest judicial authorities of participating states, sharing experience in the administration of justice and developing common approaches to issues relevant to modern courts.
The basis for cooperation was laid by the Protocol of Intent signed in 2009 by the highest judicial authorities of Brazil, Russia, India and China. Subsequent BRICS judicial forums and joint statements confirmed the importance of cooperation in the judicial sphere, including the use of information technologies in justice, protection of the environment, exchange of good practices and improvement of judicial systems.
In June 2024, during the Russian BRICS Chairmanship, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation organized the Forum of Chairpersons of the Supreme Courts of BRICS Countries in Sochi. The agenda included uniformity of judicial practice, judicial protection of social rights, investor protection, and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms in criminal proceedings. The participants emphasized the importance of continuing substantive dialogue, mutual visits and educational programmes.
