About the Supreme Court

Place in the Judicial System
The judicial system of the Russian Federation is established by the Constitution and federal constitutional legislation. It includes:

• The Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation;

• The Supreme Court of the Russian Federation;

• Federal courts of general jurisdiction (including supreme courts of republics, regional and territorial courts, district courts, military courts, courts of cassation and courts of appeal);

• Federal commercial courts (including district commercial courts, commercial courts of appeal);

• Justices of the peace of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation.

The Supreme Court occupies a central position within this system as the highest judicial instance for courts of general jurisdiction and commercial courts.

Courts of general jurisdiction administer justice in civil, criminal, and administrative cases. Commercial courts consider economic disputes and other cases related to entrepreneurial and other economic activities. The Supreme Court ensures the unity of judicial practice across these branches of the judiciary.
